Those bastard grackels are not only making a mess of the feeders, but they are scaring away the finches. Yesterday (I'm pretty sure) they attacked a female finch and left her crippled. KB tried to comfort her, gave her water and we kept her protected in a box overnight but the grackels attacked her again this morning and I had to put her to sleep. Little F'ers. A male finch came by this morning but only hopped around the tree chirping and then left. think it might have been her mate.
Those grackels behave like a few guys on my crew; make a mess, take what they want, harrass and destroy and leave things in much worse shape than when they arrived. They should start their migration towards the end of the month so we only have to tolerate them for a little while longer.

How did you put her to sleep? I had to put down one of the little hens a few weeks ago because of a crooked leg. I whacked her with a hammer, but it was hard to do.
Ann. I used a bucket of water. Gently held her under. she didn't fight.
wow...a hammer?? seems harsh. but hopefully quick.
Hey Bob,
This is Curt. I was the one that did the whack. Most experienced people slit the throat, but being so small, thought the crack with the hammer was best. It was quick, she died instantly.
